Book Review — False Horizon

False Horizon is the second book in the Seth Walker series by Joseph Reid. The first is Take Off. Seth Walker is a former Air Marshall with a troubled past. All of the books involve airplanes, helicopters, and flight of some kind.
This is a page-turning adventure, with lots of gunplay and explosions, detective work, and technical description. A plane has gone down over Appalachia, a wing shorn completely off for no discernable reason. Was it a group of local eco-terrorists? Or the drug lords that have taken over the area? It is Seth Walker’s job to find out.
What saves it from being your typical guy-fest is the presence of fully realized female characters and a fairly diverse cast who actually feel badly about killing people. There are no damsels in distress and overly-testosteroned men sweeping in with machine guns to clean up the mess. Instead, there is a collection of smart and brave folks using their intellect as much as their strength to outwit the bad guys. The bad guys themselves are motivated not by a desire to do evil as much as a misguided understanding of what good is. It’s smarter and more nuanced than a lot of shoot-em-ups without sacrificing any of the excitement.
