Is Hiring a Ghost Writer the Same as Cheating?

Most of us, while in school, would never have considered paying someone to write our history paper for us.  Instinctively, that feels like cheating.  And not just instinctively – any school’s honor code would consider that cheating as well.

So why is hiring a ghost writer different?

In school, you are given a grade based on a test or a paper that you wrote.  That test or paper is supposed to represent what you have learned in a particular class, and is an assessment of your knowledge.  It’s how you prove you learned what you should have learned.  If someone else does the work for you in that context, it is a demonstration of the other person’s knowledge, not yours.

Ghost writing, especially in a professional context, is completely different.  When writing needs to be done at work, it is because the writing needs to be done.  No one much cares how or who, so long as it gets done properly.  The end product is what matters. Hiring a ghost writer is one of the best ways to get things done properly.

Delegation is not a skill that is much prized in school: in the office, the ability to delegate tasks that others can do better or more efficiently is the hallmark of a good employee.  Delegation is cost effective.  Delegation gets more done in less time.

Ghost writing is merely a name for delegation of writing duties.

You have already proven your worth by getting the job.  You have the knowledge, you have the abilities.  Getting someone else to write down in proper form what you know isn’t cheating.  It’s good business.
