BOOK REVIEW: Furiously Happy
Furiously Happy: A Funny Book About Horrible Things
by Jenny Lawson
Furiously Happy made me furiously happy to read it, and just plain furious when it was over, because Jenny Lawson is so ridiculously funny and profound you can’t believe she’s a real person.
She starts the book arguing with her mother about whether or not she is crazy or just a little ‘different.’ Exhibit A is her multiple, very serious diagnoses. Exhibit B is a collection of her fabulous coping mechanisms and raging success. I’m so glad that her best coping mechanism is her willingness to strip herself bare and let us see her un-retouched. Her emotional cellulite, so to speak, is on display.
But forget about that. I mean, this is a book about depression and crippling anxiety and self-harm, sure, but it’s also a book that you can’t read in public because you will embarrass yourself by whooping and snorting and crying rivers of tears because you are laughing so hard. I’d suggest Depends, or at least a pantiliner. And whatever you do, don’t drink anything, or you will spew it across the room.
She will make you sad that you don’t own a stuffed raccoon. Or if you do, that your raccoon isn’t as cool as Rory, nor does he have midnight rodeos with the cats.
